Hello friends. I wanted to let you know that mixing of the album has continued since I've gotten back from tour with Bearkat . All is going well and I'm excited for all of you to hear the tracks as soon as they are finished. Since that still may be a while I wanted to share some of the tracks that I've recorded in the last few months that won't be on the album. I will be uploading them to my bandcamp page. They will all be free downloads so head on over!
The latest one is titled "The Hills On Fire", which I have been working on for quite some time. It started out as a tune with a completely different set of lyrics that I never really liked. Welcome to another Free Music Friday! This week we have 1 song but 2 mp3's! You may be asking, "wait what?". Here's the story folks. A few moths back I started work on a song called "Treason". As I wrote the song it was in 4/4 time, and remained that way until completion. The time then came for the song to be recorded, except as I started recording it something just didn't feel right. So I decided to change it to 3/4 or a waltz. I then finished the track complete with backing vocals, many guitars, bass, drums, and even banjo. But of course I still wasn't too happy with it. Then a few days later I played it for my Dad and he said "wait, I thought when you were writing this it was in 4/4. what happened?" So I explained the whole story to him and he then said to me that I should re-record the song in its original 4/4. So that is just what I did. And since I am still hard at work on the new album (ya thats still going friends) and have no place to put new songs I decide to share both the 4/4 & 3/4 versions of "Treason" with you. In my opinion the 4/4 version is the best, although I do believe the 3/4 has a bit of charm. What do you think? I'd enjoy your thoughts on the matter.

Hello Folks. I wanted to give all of you a "thank you" for being so great! The album is taking a bit longer than anticipated but only because I keep finding new ways to make it better & better. All of you have been so positive with your facebook & e-mail messages that I decided I should give you something. A few months back I was approached by a nice lady asking if I would contribute a song to a 60's bubble gum pop compilation. I asked her which songs had been recorded so far and she gave me a list filled with "The Locomotion", "Sugar Sugar", "It's My Party" etc etc. I then went to work trying to figure out what song I could record. I then hit upon the idea of asking my Mom (who is a 60's bubble gum pop expert) which song she would like me to do. She suggested "Johnny Angel", and while I really love that song (Lou Adler, producer of the Mama's & the Papa's & Johnny Rivers, wrote it) I didn't think I could tackle a song that is sung from the perspective of a lady....So I then decided upon another of my Mom's favorite tunes "Venus" made popular by Franky Avalon. Its really quite cheese ball, but there is something about it that I really love. I remember going to a 50's diner with my parents and this song coming on the juke box. A very lush production. Anyway I decided to replace the string section with backing vocals and lots of guitars. The 60's bubble gum pop compilation never came to light and my version of "Venus" has been sitting unloved for a few months. Please give it some love. Hope you enjoy.

The gig at IPO was kind of interesting. We were on stage, tuned up, ready to roll and were even announced and then all of a sudden the sound guy comes up and starts plugging in the microphones.....so we had to stand up there for about 10 mins while he attempted to get the sound right. I felt really bad for the guy because I could tell he was rushing around all night trying to get the very different band set ups to sound the best they could. Unfortunately he never was able to get us the right sound on stage. Both Kenny & I said after that we couldn't hear our guitars at all. Again I can't blame the sound guy too much as he was doing the best he could. I only mention this to you so I can explain what happened next......So we couldn't hear very well and it was a bit of a drag. Well instead of crying about it I gave Kenny a shrug of the shoulders and did my best Pete Townsend windmill. I then said into the mic "this set is for Harry Nilsson". We then proceeded to play our most electrically charged set to date. Now I'm not saying this was a good thing. I'm also not saying it was a bad thing. It was sort of in the middle. I felt like we made the best of a kind of lame situation. Anyway we blew past "Caroline" and charged right into "I Don't Believe You" which was a lot of fun. Kenny yelled his backing vocals which gave me a bit of a giggle. "Ballad Of A Raincoat" turned into a stomp with me yelling the chorus's. "All The Good Looking Girls Are Dead" started out a bit shaky but then we got it together and it actually grooved along not so bad. "It's Fine" was the weakest of the night. So lets pass that one by..... "Day Of The Dead" somehow became our best number. I think its because we brought the volume down for the start then really built it up so that by the end we were rolling along. By this point our time must have run out because the fella gave me the one more song signal. So we played "Don't Let Me Down". I clicked on my distortion for the whole song. I think Kenny did the same. I then broke a string and Kenny followed. We rocked too hard. It was fun I suppose, I just won't make a habit out of it.

hello readers. i know its been a while since i've let you in on the progress of the new album. in the time since my last post the album has been given a name: "shipwrecked commotion". all along i knew it needed a nautical title, and while we were mixing "visions of drowning" the line "we'll be in the ocean, a shipwrecked commotion..." came over the speakers and into my brain. it then zoomed past the hearst castle & frida kahlo information storage shed, and zapped into the album titles folder. so "shipwrecked commotion" it is.

artwork for the album has started to come together and i am excited to show you what we come up with. as for the most important part the music, we have 12 songs mixed and ready to go. which means only 2 more are left. once we have all 14 completed i will start work on a running order. still not sure if it will 12 or 14 songs on the album. time will tell.

very soon (any day now) i will be posting a free download of one of the new songs as a thank you to all of you for continued support of my musical endeavors. i am so thankful to all of you that send e-mails, facebook messages/comments, & blog comments. you guys are awesome!

oh yeah, i have a show this sunday @ the joint! david bash of the international pop overthrow has asked us to play once again at his first class power pop music festival. we've played two times before and are just as excited to play again. its always a pleasure to see david and the bands he gets to play on the bill. if you only go to one of my shows this year, this is the one to see! check out the flier below for more info.

hello friends. the album is coming along quite nicely. its lots and lots and lots of hard work, and i am putting every ounce of mental & physical energy i have into this project. i wouldn't have it any other way of course. something is guiding this project along, and that something isn't something i can quite put my finger on. it has led the album into the hands of producer/engineer chris jago, who was THE perfect man for the job. in addition this something has been kind enough to lead me back to an old friend and huge talent by the name of gabe dulek. gabe & i have been having mixing sessions for the last 3 weeks and the results are amazing. he has a great feel for this music and treats it with such respect that its almost hard for me to deal with. i lucked out big time. i've also been adding more guitar & vocal parts here and there as needed. tonight i added more guitar & a tambourine part to "dress me in bowties". i cannot wait for all of you to hear the finished product. i promise you it will be worth the wait! stay tuned..... - Paul

Magical Mystery Tour

This is my favorite scene from The Beatles 1967 movie "Magical Mystery Tour", which at the time was put down as "too weird" & "self-indulgent". I think its great to watch. I agree it is very weird, but in a great way. Of course the songs are fantastic: I Am The Walrus, Fool On The Hill, Blue Jay Way, Your Mother Should Know. Anyway this photo is from the scene where John is a waiter shoving spaghetti onto the fat woman's plate. In The Beatles Anthology book Paul says that John dreamed that scene and they decided to film it based on the dream. Can you imagine that happening in a movie today? Another reason why "Magical Mystery Tour" is great.

I wanted to let you all know that this is my new favorite song. I can't stop listening to it. Barbara Lewis is best known for her songs "Hello Stranger" (which she wrote), "Baby I'm Yours", & "Make Me Your Baby". While those three songs are classics that we all know very well, "Pushin' A Good Thing Too Far" is a album cut I had never heard until purchasing Barbara's greatest hits. The chorus is so catchy & perfect that it stays in my brain all day and night. I love way she sings throughout, but when she sings "i'm at the point of no return, i'm burning but its time you learned a thing or two" the way she sings "burning" is PERFECT. great song. Listen to it.
p.s. i'm not too fond of the middle part with the male singers, but at the time it was the thing to do.

Yesterday we recorded various electric guitar parts for: Old Tack Pianos, It's Fine, & Visions of Drowning. We then recorded lead vocals for "It's Fine" & "Dress Me In Bowties". I then did a run through of "Hey Now Dana" but decided to leave it till the next day. That next day is today and I am in fact just about to head out the door to the session. So more on that later!

Tonight we started recording around 5. My Dad was along to be an extra set of ears. I started off recording a lead vocal track to "Caroline". Once we had a take we liked, I recorded the "evil" backing vocal parts. Then I added the "aws" & "oos" which really put a strain on my voice, but well worth it as the song is now complete. Here are the instruments featured on "Caroline": drums, bass, 6 electric guitars, 12 string acoustic guitar, banjo, handclaps, & tambourine. Woo! Next I recorded a lead vocal to "All The Good Looking Girls Are Dead". I then attempted to start the backing vocals but my voice was shot. So we then did a quick run through of "Mark Twain Boat" and decided to call it for the night. Recording is now 60% finished. More to come!

Last night producer Jago & I got started around 9. Chris showed up with his nephew and the nephews girlfriend. They watched as I laid down electric guitar to "I Don't Believe You". For the rhythm guitar I played my telecaster. Then switched to the 335 for the lead and bridge parts. I then thought it would be cool to have everyone add a shout to the track. After the line "you're a liar" we all gathered round the microphone and yelled "Judas!" 2 times. I will have to get the names of the couple from Chris so I can add them to the liner notes! After we finished the shouting Chris and the gang decided to head out to a bar. So we said our goodbyes and then Jago & I got back to work. I next added electric guitar to "All The Good Looking Girls Are Dead". Again I used my telecaster for the rhythm sections and stayed with it for the first part of the guitar solo. I then recorded the answering lines of the guitar solo with the 335, which I must say sounded really great. The two guitars weaving in and out of each other really sounds cool. The next song we tackled was "Mark Twain Boat", which is turning out to be my favorite recording so far. I added a rhythm track with the 335. It had a great over driven tone, not distorted, just overdriven. Really pushed the song up a notch. I then recorded a guitar solo with my telecaster. I was trying to get a James Burton sound and let Jago know this. He knew exactly what I was going for and dialed in the classic telecaster sound. I was very pleased. By this point it was about 10 mins to midnight and we decided to start work on one more song. So we went with "Visions Of Drowning". I added ringing chord changes and arpeggio passes to the track. I then doubled what I had done and we decided to call it a night as it was now about 12:45. Jago and I talked for a bit afterward about a tour he is going on in May, which sounds amazing. He played me some tracks of the guy he's playing for. Has a Stevie Ray Vaughn vibe. Very cool sounding. We then discussed some of the recordings and had a few beers. Very productive night. We go again Friday night. Stay tuned!

Yesterday started the first day of over-dubs. We began the session with me over-dubing electric guitar parts onto "Ballad of a Raincoat". I used my telecaster for all of "Raincoat". Then my good friend Jerry showed up to add some bass trombone to Raincoat's bridge sections. Producer Jago stuck a bass mic on the trombone and really got a big crunchy sound. Really sounded great, and will sound even better when mixed in with the rest of the tracks. After Jerry had left I finished adding guitar to "Raincoat" and moved onto "Caroline". Started out adding various arpeggio parts to the chorus's & middle 8 with my telecaster. Then for the outro lead part I switched to my gibson 335. Next we tackled "Dress Me In Bow-ties", which I added telecaster throughout. For the lead guitar parts I played the 335 through the big muff distortion pedal (which Doug from MyntGreen, loaned to me). During the fade out of the song Jago came up with the great idea to play the lead guitar part a octive up & down which really sounded great. We all then listened back to the song and decided the guitar parts were complete. I go in again tomorrow to add more guitar tracks. Stay tuned for more updates!!!

Yesterday we got started around 3pm. The first song we tracked was "I Don't Believe You", which started out as a kind of light jazz song on the first few takes. As we got going it became a bouncing stomp of a rock tune. Dave & my Dad really made it come alive. Next we tracked "Visions Of Drowning" which we've played for about 4 years now. We recorded two takes. Both sounded good, although I think take 2 was best. We then started work on "Dress Me In Bow-ties" which went amazingly well. We recorded three takes of the song, with take 3 being the best. We all agreed that it was the most fun we'd had recording. It just came together so easily,and we all played very well. Next we recorded four takes of "Hey Now Dana". Dave really laid down some great fills on this one. We then started work on "Old Tack Pianos". We attempted one take but I really wasn't feeling it & my guitar didn't seem to be in tune (no matter how many times I attempted to tune it...) So Jago the producer said lets come back to it. So we then went onto "Mark Twain Boat" which really felt good. Dave started the track off with a 4 bar drum solo/groove, and then my Dad came in with a walking bass line. Really sounded great. Dave's girlfriend Masaya came by during tracking for "Mark Twain Boat". She brought us a salad. I call her Den Mom because she always takes good care of us. She listened as we recorded about 5 takes and then she had to take off. We then decided to take a break and have some salad and then take another shot at "Old Tack Pianos". After our stomachs were full, we laid down 4 more takes of "Old Tack Pianos", with take 4 being the best. We then listened to all 11 songs we had recorded over the last 2 days. They all sound really great. BIG sounding drums, THICK bass. This week I start overdubs: guitars, banjo, bass trombone, percussion, etc. Then this weekend I start vocals. Stay tuned........
